EULOGY FOR EDDIE
This can’t be…This can’t be… That is all I kept saying aloud to myself after I got the call from the rehabilitation center. Tragically it was. Eddie and I were supposed to grow old together. I cannot handle never seeing him again or talking to him again. He was the person that I bounced everything off of.
Eddie was a one of a kind.
- He was my fierce, loyal backup while I was working undercover, and we grew close then. As long as he was there, I knew nothing bad would happen to me.
- To be honest, he himself was a little scruffy back in the day. When you work undercover you start to look like your defendants. Then I saw him dressed up for court, wearing a navy-blue suit, and the rest was history.
- He had 4 children with his late wife and when we first got serious, I didn’t want children because I was driven in my career.
- Then I changed my mind and after much discussion, he changed his mind about starting over with more children. We got involved in the foster care system. He already had raised 4 children, and they were just starting to get older, and he agreed to what I wanted, that speaks volumes.
- Then Eddie took his fierceness and loyalty and started battling DYFS. His 4 children welcomed Catherine, that was the way they were raised.
- He was very kind and big-hearted and he was extremely social and liked to have fun. He always had a joke to tell, he had one for every occasion.
- We moved to Lake Lackawanna and built a house, and he was so proud of it because he was the general contractor overseeing everything.
- At Lake Lackawanna we joined the Gourmet Club and of course Eddie cooked when we had a function because certainly no one would want to eat what I made. Eddie was a very good cook. We went on boat trips with our friends from Lake Lackawanna. Friday nights we had “woo-woo parties”. Of course, all of that was prior to Catherine, except for some gourmet dinners at our house. Eddie decided to do a lobster bake, but he needed sea grass to make it authentic. He went into the ocean after removing his shoes and he kept going out further to get what he needed, and the tide kept going further into shore. Then he saw his shoes floating by. Luckily, he got them back. But that was Eddie, when he committed to something he was all in. At that gourmet club cooking the lobsters, one of them bit him and as you can imagine he flung his hand and arm and the lobster hit Catherine in the head. So now we had a crying child with a babysitter, and Eddie did his best to remedy the crying, but he calmly continued cooking for the lobster bake because that was what he had committed to do. Catherine never let Eddie forget that he threw a lobster at her.
- We bought a condo at the shore. He met a group of people, and every Friday night we’d have margarita nights at our condo, because Eddie had a love of people and a zest for fun.
- Once we moved full time to the shore, he bought a scooter so he could have more freedom, and yes, a better ability to connect with people and make new friends.
- Once I came home to find a woman that I didn’t know sitting on the floor in our family room by Eddie’s chair. They were eating Christmas cookies that her mother had made. She introduced herself and she was a neighbor that he had met on one of his scooter excursions. Life with Eddie was always an adventure.
- He was always positive about his cancer diagnosis, and he went beyond most expectations. Then his body just couldn’t do it anymore. Don’t remember the compromised Eddie because that’s not who he was.
- Remember the free spirit that joined Tri-County Motorcycle Club, and the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. Remember the guy that while we were snowmobiling wouldn’t let a friend’s 20-year-old son beat him in a race. Eddie did win but he hit a tree in the process. OK, maybe he did sometimes take the free spirit too far. Remember the free spirit that went with Ed Oliver and Joe in Eddie’s pontoon boat through the Point Pleasant canal and Manasquan Inlet into the ocean.
- Remember the guy that was passionate. He made a 2 and ¼ ton marijuana bust one Easter morning, after doing many hours of surveillance, over months. That was tenacity because our Lieutenant was on his case to close out that “squeal sheet” because it was getting too old with nothing happening. But Eddie knew that he’d take down that dealer one day.
- He was innovative. I was working a group undercover, and I was told that I couldn’t spend anymore money on one defendant. Eddie suggested that I have the defendant “front” me drugs so then we knew he’d hang around for his money, and then we could arrest him. This was unheard of, but it worked. He always had my back on the job and off the job, and I thank him.
- He was a bright guy who set up, in the Prosecutor’s Office for Victim-Witness letters to be translated into Spanish. He started a program for college interns to work in our office for free, they’d get college credits, and we’d get free help.
- He made an impact on many people. He noticed that the same man kept showing up at all of his trials when he was testifying. Eddie finally asked him what he was doing there. The man explained I like watching you in court and what you do. You arrested me and you saved my life. I got straight after my arrest.
- He was very kind and involved in the community of Lake Lackawanna. One of our neighbors passed away and they were an elderly couple without means. Eddie collected money throughout our community to help the widow pay for her husband’s burial, and he met with the funeral home and worked a deal for a greatly discounted funeral cost.
- Eddie was very proud of his children and his upbringing, including the Lutheran Church. He was a protector who would protect his loved ones at all costs. Please pray that he’s in Heaven with God, his parents and his brother, and my parents and my brother.
- He’d always say that if the motorcycle accident didn’t kill him, 18 surgeries later, cancer wasn’t going to beat him. He always kept a positive attitude.
- He taught his boys how to work on vehicles and how to do home improvement projects. He taught his girls how to stand up for themselves. And he taught me unconditional love. May the love of Jesus Christ shine on him, and on us as we struggle.
- Rest in Peace Eddie, I will always have a hole in my heart. You were my life. You were beyond the best. I love you.

Ed has always been the best friend that anyone could ever ask for. Always upbeat and uplifting. Always ready with a helping hand, a joke (most of them funny, some really groan-worthy), or a heap of sympathy and encouragement. This world will be a much poorer place without him.
