Rest well my old friend and boss, learning another trade working with you and at the same time having fun doing it plus completing the job 100% made me think back when I was 18/19 years old, hey I can do this, and then let me run a couple of your jobs as the Forman not only trained me for my future career, but also the confidence I didn’t know I had,
Thank you for being you, it definetly impacted me, even though you enjoyed breaking my chops doing it cause I was a kid, I think it made it better.
I send to your family from the Murray Family our deepest condolences.
Rest well Richard (Dick)

Dear Grandpa,
As I write this letter upon your passing I’m recalling the many Father’s Day cards I made you as a child. Growing up, I would spend hours thinking about how to tell you I love you and how thankful I was to have you in my life. Often the card would be a drawing of our home and a nod my appreciation of you giving up your office so that I could have my big girl bedroom. Now, as a grown woman and a mother myself, the words and feelings of deep love come more fluidly… you were the first man I loved and your passing is one of my life’s greatest heartbreaks. Growing up I knew you as more than the big man with a deep voice and ever-present suspenders… you were the man who could tame my unruly hair into braids, who fixed countless flat bike tires, let me play in your workshop for hours, rifling through mason jars of nuts and bolts and playing with your vast collection of old Timey telephones. You were responsible for maintaining our awesome tree fort, and for building the most epic wagon that Tumbling Brook ever saw. Grandpa, you catered our family dinners with the most succulent steaks and taught me the delicacy of mandarin snails and lamb marrow. You also gifted me the beauty of grandfather and cuckoo clocks, and the warmth an antique music box can bring to a home. Because of you I know how to navigate a toboggan down the best sleigh-ride hill this side of the Mississippi. I know how to spit cherry pits and shuck corn off the back deck in summertime. I’m sorry but I still don’t know how to change a tire or the oil on my car, regardless how many times you tried to teach me. As I grew older and our relationship developed into one of mutual respect, understanding, and humor, I saw a softer and more human side of the hero I had growing up. When Brian visited you to get your blessing on our engagement, he was shocked as you tearfully spoke of our many walks (me on your shoulders) and memories shared over the years. The absolute gentleman in you also declined to co-walk me down the aisle, citing that Noel has more than earned the right to be the father of the bride… a passing of the torch that touched my heart deeply. Within the last year of your life I was again able to see you transform in your new role as great-grandfather. Just days ago I observed you light up brilliantly watching my son teeter toddler around your living room, taking care to keep an eye on his every move and try to translate his every coo and cah. Big Joe, as you playfully called him, will know your legacy. He will know you loved him, as I have known my whole life. Every time I dress him in suspenders I will remind him it is a symbol of Dick Goodman- a great man. A symbol of the man who held up our family, a man that will never be forgotten. I love you grandpa and I hope I make you proud
love, Dan
Ps- when you see bandit and beau, tell them I’m sorry for them taking the blame when I used to steal your cooling bacon from the kitchen on Sunday mornings… it was just irresistible!

First of all let me say that today we all feel the weight of the loss of a unique and special individual. He was passionate about his love for his family, he was never afraid to voice his opinion and he took a head on approach to life and its many challenges. He was and remains one of my favorite people for not only these attributes but for his affable manner his appreciation of life‘s many gifts and also for his simplicity and honesty. To say that he will be missed is a huge understatement
On Thanksgiving day he shared with me his deep appreciation for being accepted into this family. Dick took nothing for granted. When he asked for Pat’s hand in marriage as a young man he was looked upon with a certain degree of scrutiny. He laughed about how his buying his 1st home was actually considered irresponsible at his age. He was unapologetic then and he was unapologetic until the end about the way he lived his life and did his best to protect your family he loved and would lay down his life for. I treasure the time I was able to spend with him while he was here and I will hold the memory of his spirit forever in my heart. May we all appreciate him for the man he was and I love & laughter he brought into our lives
