Joe Cali was a leader, a counselor, mentor, and fighter. As you got to know him he became a true friend, a warm and caring individual. He would tell us of his new ventures and accomplishments, such as when he built a deck and outdoor backyard grill, in full detail with pictures detailing each phase. He took great pride of working on his cars. He shared his life experiences in the military, ie. working on the air craft. Joe often would pick up a WWII book and go through it explain in detail the geographical areas, and battles. He shared stories of his family, always very proud of his son, and grandchildren.
I thank God for having met and worked with Joe who yes, was a father to me and many others.
To Phyllis and family, may God bless you and comfort you at this time.

I was really taken by surprise when I saw the picture of Joe in the paper.
It was long ago in Jersey City when Joe, Adele and Richie lived at 8 or 6(not sure) Dwight Street in Jersey City and we lived at 4 Dwight Street. My dad and mom were very good friends with the family and I used to play alot with Richie in the streets back then. Joe was my brother Jack's sponser for confirmation and Adele was my sisters Godmother. My name is Michael Hayes, my Dads name was John and my Moms name was Mary. We moved from Jersey City much to my regret in 1956, and we truly missed the Calis as neighbors.
I was just a small boy but I remember Joe so well, when I saw his picture I knew him right away. I live in Wood-Ridge now, with my wife Judith and I have one son Corey whos 22
now. My Mom passed away in 2012 and my Dad in 1988.
I remember Joe as the nicest man.
Anyway to all the Cali family my sincerest sympathy.
Michael Hayes
