Obituary of Valerie A. Hiler

Please share a memory of Valerie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Valerie Anne Hiler, 89, of Denville, NJ, passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2020.

Born in London, England to the late Charles and Eileen (Hart) Pisar. Valerie came to the United States at the age of ten and worked hard to lose her British accent because she was teased.

Valerie married the love of her life, Robert D. Hiler, Sr. in 1953 and their union produced 5 children, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She and Robert started their own hair salon, "Mr. Roberts Coiffures" in Boonton. Valerie handled the books, their older clientele and specialized in coloring hair. Robert was the stylist. In the early 1970's Valerie began a banking career, working her way up from Teller to Assistant Vice President over a span of 25 years, retiring from Chase Bank in 1998. Following "retirement" Valerie sat on the board and worked tirelessly at the Ada Buddrick Childcare and Learning Center in Boonton.

Valerie was a longstanding member of Boonton Rotary, having served as Secretary, Treasurer and President at various times. She was awarded the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow 3 times.

Valerie and Robert did everything together. They never missed a grandchild's baseball or soccer game. They loved dancing and going camping in their trailer which they dubbed the Hiler Hilton.

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas she would name the turkey. We don't know why. She loved to play the lottery and religiously watch the numbers being drawn every night. She never hit it big, but she was thrilled with every little win.

She loved Jeopardy, especially if there was someone there to watch her get all the answers.

She loved a glass of wine at night because a doctor told her a glass of wine was good for her and she always followed doctors' orders.

She loved to sit on the patio with Robert watching the Yankees while feeding peanuts to the squirrels and blue jays (aka Mr. Squiggs and Mr. Jay). She also loved to watch the Devils, Giants and Red Bulls.

Valerie loved her smart phone. She called it her lifeline. She texted, played Angry Birds and Candy Crush and posted pictures on Instagram.

Valerie loved life.

And more than anything else Valerie loved being with Robert and the rest of her family.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Robert Hiler, Sr. earlier this year. Surviving are her devoted children, Shauna (Michael) Stanley, Robert, Jr. (Laura), Norman (Laurie), Paul (the late Karen) and Alison (Michael) Rice; cherished grandchildren, Michael, Russell, Ryan, Cassandra, Sean, Nicole, Erik, Kira and Edan; adored great grandsons, Brandon, Joshua, Carson and Alexander; and former son-in-law, Russell Bakke, Sr.

Please join the family at a walk-through visitation on Tuesday, November 24th from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Codey & Mackey Funeral Home, 107 Essex Ave., Boonton, New Jersey. A service celebrating her life will be held in the funeral home on Wed., Nov. 25th at 11:00 am, followed by the interment at Greenwood Cemetery in Boonton.
