A Tribute to Carlos Ribeiro
I first met Carlos in September of last year. It was when I made the decision “overnight” to take on the role as ERP4IT program manager and learned that Carlos and Brian Kilcrease were on their way to Wiesbaden. They were coming over on behalf of Pat Liskoff to get a better understanding of where KION Group IT stood – what the status was – in terms of its IT service management. Admittedly, the first impression from some of the IT colleagues here in Germany was that he was a somewhat “rare bird”; he was from Dematic and lived and worked in New Jersey, and thus he was not necessarily greeted with open arms on that first trip over here.
Cut ahead to five months later and I can easily say that Carlos had firmly established for his area of responsibility in ERP4IT, stream lead CI/ CMDB, a global network of contact and had a positive reputation with all who came into contact with him, which speaks a lot about Carlos’ character. This fact alone makes it especially difficult for me as his program manager to contact several colleagues via email and give him a tribute following the sad news at the end of the week that he had died suddenly and very unexpectedly. I simply want to say that in the short months we worked together, he had achieved quite a bit for our new program.
His character, his open attitude as well as his outstanding expertise and commitment, not to mention that he simply was who he was – no airs about him – really left an impression on me and others with whom he worked closely with. Again, it simply makes the sad consequences of last week even more difficult to consider; the care and effort he seemed to put into everything he managed. This was how he approached his role in ERP4IT and that “other 24/7 job” he had as an operations manager for Kion Americas!
His work ethic truly embodied many of the ground rules laid out by the ERP4IT Steering Committee and which I am a firm believer are success factors for any project out there, namely “leverage talent globally” and “benefit from diversity”.
When I look back over our brief time of working together with him, I can honestly say that he brought a necessary pragmatism to what might often be described as a ‘German desire to ‘overengineer‘ to our program; and did so without ever diminishing the quality since he was a virtuoso when it came to mastering the “Best Practice” in IT service delivery.
Indeed, it will not be easy to find someone to step into his very big shoes and pick up the role he has left behind and built with so much blood, sweat and tears these last several months.
Yet knowing his dedication to his work and what he wanted to achieve in his role, I am certain he would want us to move forward without missing a beat so that we can accomplish what we all had set out to do – including Carlos.
Quem dei diligunt, adulescens moritur.
Only the good die young.
On behalf of the entire ERP4IT Core Team
Christoph Kettenbach
Senior Project Manager

We were very fortunate to have had Carlos as our son’s soccer coach throughout the years. He was very inspirational and instilled the love of soccer in all of the boys. He was focused on developing character and integrity in these young boys who are now young men. Thank you, Carlos, for being such a great coach and person! Go Lightning!

It saddens me to hear of the passing of Carlos. We were classmates at Essex Catholic, Newark, graduating together in 1978. I remember Carlos as a fun loving individual. He worked hard, and had a great sense of humor. We used to hang out at the home of John Kiss in North Newark and just laugh. I pray for the repose of his soul and for the strength of our Risen Lord to assist the family.
