Hi I knew Michael from Cares. I loved him instantly he was such a loving young man. I text him just about every month to see how he was doing and reminding him a loving x addict was there for him any time he needed a friend and that he wasn't alone. My heart hurts for your entire family. Cares is always there for any of your family members to reach out at anytime. God Bless you and comfort you all at this very difficult time. I will miss him and I will work even harder in his memory to fight this damn epidemic!!!!

No words I write could ever say
How sad and empty I felt the day
The Angels came for you
Much sooner than planned
We will brave the bitter grief that comes
And try our best understand
Mikey, why did you have to go away
Why wasn't it right for you to stay
What we're suffering seems so unfair
But one thing is for certain
Our love for you will always be there
A thousand words won't bring you back
Neither will a thousand tears
Now you're up in Heaven
With the Angels up above
They will take our place for now
And they'll give you all their love
So go and rest in peace now
For all our love and memories
We will hold forever near
Uncle Bobby

Art & I remember the first time we met Michael, it was 1988. We were looking to buy a house in Mountain Lakes and we were looking at a house that just happened to back up to the Wallin’s house. On the side of the house there are tall cedar trees with tons of branches that are close together. We walked out on the deck and were inspecting the yard when I said to Art, there are children way up in those trees. Once they saw us, they didn’t move or make a sound. Mike was three and Tommy was four, and my guess is they were not supposed to be climbing the trees. Out first introduction to the Wallin boys: fearless, adventurous, and so full of life.
Over the years our families melded – we vacationed every year together at the NCAA Lacrosse Championship, we BBQ’d constantly over the summer months, we spent birthdays and holidays together.
The day after Michael had finished kindergarten, he was shooting hoops in the Bucks yard. Art was heading to work and he stopped and chatted with Michael.
Art: Hey Mike, so I hear you finished kindergarten.
Mike: Yup
Art: How long are you out for?
Mike: Pauses, scratches his chin and replies “A Couple of years”
His enthusiasm for life was ever present.
Years later when Dylan was about 3, he was playing in the Wallin’s yard. Michael was upstairs in a window and called out:
Mike: “Dylan”
Dylan: “What
Mike” “Dylan this is the Lord”
Dylan: “What”
Mike: “Get out of the Wallins yard”
Dylan ran home as fast as he coud.
Michael was an amazing athlete. He was quick and had an amazing lacrosse IQ. On the lacrosse field, he played attack and had a record 5 goals in the State Championship game. It was so fun to watch him
We all know Michaels fell on some hard times. But through it all, the one thing that stood out to me was that his heart never hardened. His heart was always open.
Last year when my mother passed away, Michael called to make sure I was ok. We had a long conversation about life and loss, and his words comforted me.
I remember how he cared for Josie, a rescue that Nikki and Sean had. They needed someone to look after her till she got adopted, and Michael took excellent care of her and they fully bonded. We wound up adopting Josie, but every time we would see Michael, Josie immediately went to him for some love. She felt safe and loved with him.
This past Easter, we spent hours laughing and telling stories with the Wallin’s. We really had such a wonderful time. The next day I received this text from Michael “That was a lot of fun last night… haven’t laughed like that in a long time!! Love you guys.”.
What happened is a tragedy. It should never happen to anyone, but I am thankful that we gave Michael some joy and love and laughter and I am grateful to have called him my friend.
