Obituary of William H. Cameron

William Harvey Cameron, age 73, of Mountain Lakes, NJ, passed away on
Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Merry Heart in Boonton Township, NJ.
William was born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Evanston, Illinois. He attended Evanston High School, Class of 1960. He graduated from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, Class of 1964. While at Northwestern, William met and married his college sweetheart, Barbara Hostetler Cameron, NU Class of 1964. He received his MBA from Roosevelt University, Chicago, Illinois, Class of 1971.
After starting his career with Illinois Bell Telephone Company, he transferred to AT&T in Basking Ridge, New Jersey in 1981. He and his family have lived in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey since 1981. At AT&T, he served in many management roles. A highlight of his career was coordinating communications at the 1996 USA Centennial Olympic Games where he and his team received the Gold Medal for Performance.
William served as Director of the AT&T and Lucent Technologies National Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery Team working to resolve communications in national disasters such as Hurricane Andrew, the San Francisco Earthquake, and many more.
When AT&T was divided into several companies, William became the Continuity Planning Director for Lucent Technologies where he was instrumental in forming a new partnership with CWA and IBEW. He also played an important role in the reorganization of Lucent Technologies. He spent 35 years with Illinois Bell, AT&T and Lucent Technologies and retired in 2001. He continued working as a consultant for both AT&T and Lucent Technologies for several years.
William enjoyed volunteer work with Junior Achievement, the US Gymnastics Association, and all levels of baseball coaching. He was passionate about the HERD, Mountain Lakes Football Team, the Yankees and the Chicago Bulls. William worked extensively with Recordings for the Blind where he drew and designed their Christmas Cards for several years. He also designed brochures for Infant Welfare of Chicago and La Rabida Children's Hospital of Chicago.
He could often be seen in Mountain Lakes walking his Boxer dogs, canoeing, and working in his garden. His greatest passion revolved around his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
William is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Barbara Hostetler Cameron, two children and their families; Robert Cameron, his wife Elizabeth Lacy Cameron and their children, Davis Cameron and Brooke Cameron; his daughter, Karen Gershman, her husband Joseph and their two children, Caroline and Andrew; his brother John Cameron; his sister Patricia Seneco; and his sister-in-law Dolores Jean Williams, as well as extended family and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 11:00 am in the Community Church of Mountain Lakes, 48 Briarcliff Road, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046.
