BOONTON---Retired Boonton Chief of Police, William G. Bednar, died peacefully on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at his home. He was 86. Born in Boonton, he was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Boonton High School in 1943 and served in the the U.S. Marine Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II as a sergeant in the aviation division. Chief Bednar served the Town of Boonton for 36 years. He joined the department in 1949 after his military service, made first detective sergeant in 1963, first detective captain in 1967, deputy chief in 1971 and finally, Chief in 1974. He retired in 1983. He was a lifelong parishioner at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church, a member of the Morris County Police Chiefs Association, the National Sokols, Boonton and, for many years, a member of the Harmony Senior Drum Corps, Boonton. In addition, he dabbled in stone masonry. A son, Brian X. Bednar, died in 2000. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gloria (nee Kasak); two sons, Robert A. and his wife Jan of Long Valley and Bruce D. and his wife Dawn of Annandale; a dear daughter-in-law, Kathleen Bednar and six cherished grandchildren, David and his wife Larissa, Mark and his wife Jessica, Timothy, Nicole, Ryan and Michael. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, April 23rd at 11:00 A.M. at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church, 215 Hill St., Boonton with interment to follow at the parish cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 2-6 PM at the Mackey Funeral Home ( www.mackeyfh.com), 107 Essex Ave., Boonton. Memorial contributions in Bill's name may be made to the Kiwanis Ambulance Service of Boonton, P.O. Box 16, Boonton, NJ 07005. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
